I'm incredibly excited to be participating in my all-time favorite interior design event, The One Room Challenge™. You may have seen one of my past ORC projects here, here, here, here, or here. My most recent ORC was in a friend's house, and the rest were in my previous house. Our family of three is now a family of two, and my daughter and I have a new (to us) house that we're looking forward to moving into and enjoying after the complete renovation that this ranch house requires. Luckily, Linda, from Calling it Home, the creator and owner of The One Room Challenge™ invited me to be a Featured Designer. All of the changes in my life have been time consuming, and I've very much missed being here at The Pink Pagoda. The ORC will give me the push to jump right back in, and the motivation I need to get started on this somewhat overwhelming renovation project.

Our house was built in 1969, and was owned by one family who loved and maintained it well. It's ours now, and it's time for updating. My ORC project includes the original dining room, which we'll use as a sitting room. At 11x13, it's not large enough for our dining room furniture, but will work perfectly as a little living area. At 15x16, the original living room is a little larger and will work better as our dining room. These spaces have large openings connected by a small entry, and convey the feeling of one formal area. Because of the openness, the space requires a level of consistency in design that's best considered and completed at once. Let's look at the "before" pics and everything there is to do prior to the fun part (furniture, fabric, art, rugs, and accessories).

The renovation has started and it's incredibly messy. After going in to look around and check on progress, I had full-on asthma, which I hadn't experienced in years. For a few days I avoided going over there, and a certain very thoughtful, knowledgeable friend was quite perturbed by my lack of presence during important remodeling. She's not one to sit idly by, and took matters into her own hands.

I was told there was an order for me to pick up at my local Home Depot. Here's what was waiting for me. So funny that she found one with pink!

I've been able to spend a good bit of time over there with no ill effects. If you find yourself needing one, I recommend it.

Here's a photo of the ceiling work happening. The pitch of the roof requires that the ceilings be trayed. It's a very common way to update the standard 8 foot ceilings with which most ranch houses were built. More about that next week.

Before we get to the good, we have to experience the bad and the ugly. I can't wait to have this area all spiffed up and ready for the fun part. I hope I haven't scared you off, and you'll come back next Wednesday. There'll be lots of pretty to see : ). For example...
